The world’s highest peak Mount Everest goes live on internet with world’s highest webcam installed by Ev-K2-CNR, the mountain research group, at 5,675 meters on Kala Patthar, a smaller mountain facing the Everest. The webcam developed by German surveillance firm Mobotix operates from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Nepali time (0015 to 1215 GMT) recording stunning images of 8,848-metre Mount Everest. The images are then made available on Ev-K2-CNR website along with date and time. See the Screenshot of one of the recent images on the website!
The Webcam has set the record of highest operating webcam in the world beating Argentinean camera situated at 4,389 meters. The Integrated camera of the webcam is solar powered and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius at summit. It uses a wireless connection to transmit images to the Ev-K2-CNR Pyramid Laboratory, located at an altitude of 5,050 metres. The images, updated every five minutes are sought to help scientists to study effects of climate change on Mount Everest.
Interesting part of the camera is that it will also be involved in re-measuring the actual height of the world’s tallest peak, Everest which was measured for first time in 1856. The current measured height of Everest is 8,848 metres.
